I wasn't exactly sure where to put this sort of thread, but I think it goes good here.
So. I have this huge crush on classic fantasy. What is classic fantasy, you say? Well, what I perceive to be classic fantasy is the good ol' days (though I wasn't alive in most of them  ) when fantasy roleplaying was in its golden age (late 80s and 90s).
When I think of classic fantasy, I think of old Greyhawk, old Forgotten Realms, Pathfinder, old Everquest, etc.
One thing, though, is that I tend to best present what I believe to be classic fantasy through artwork, which is what I'll show you now, to help get my meaning across:

Do you catch my drift now? Anyway, the meaning of this thread is thus: I want to know if there are any fantasy settings that are like this anymore. Fantasy settings that catch this sort of feeling of the truly old days. So please, give me any suggestions (I'll even take suggestions of fantasy settings from back then too!).
I also like mythic fantasy a lot (think Elder Scrolls) which is a relatively unexplored niche (though Exalted does it, but it's too Asian themed). |

Personally, I think it's some of the better fantasy art out there... I'm a huge Elmore fan, and I pretty much compare everything else to him. The main Pathfinder artist, Wayne Reynolds, isn't as high up in my artistic pantheon as Elmore, but he's a lot better than most other artists out there. |

I would gladly get into Pathfinder, but I just can't get past the artwork most of the time. It feels way too comic booky and not as serious as Larry Elmore's artwork displays fantasy (at least for me). |

VERY subjective thread. I'd never consider Pathfinder to be classical fantasy. |

Wheel of Time, off the top of my head, has VAST amounts of lore including multiple humanoid races with their own intricate histories and cultures. |

The artwork is easy to tie together, the artist who painted most of the early/original Dragonlance covers/artwork and the early Everquest covers/posters/artwork is one and the same, none other than Larry Elmore. The Elric art is possibly Brom.
You answered your own question, Pathfinder is a current setting with massive amounts of support. Settings of the classic bend are still being developed, supported, and played in (including successful and widespread organized play). |

I'm afraid that is a very subjective thing. I, for one, think that the flavor of the Realms changed with 4E, but others maintain that it still feels the same. I'm not saying this as any kind of edition bashing, I'm simply pointing out that different people will perceive the feel of particular settings/RPGs in different ways. I may regard one setting as feeling like one thing, but someone else may look at the same setting in an entirely different light. |
