 Old DM new to the realms.. good areas to start in?

Hi friends,
So I've been playing D&D for about 18 years and actually have never really DM'ed much of the realms at all.
About to start a new campaign for 3 friends and have decided to give realms a shot. Have done piles of reading to get familiar with it all, but just wondering..
Where would you start a campaign these days? (In around the 1480's/4e rules/low level characters) Anywhere in particular where some events in those 10-20 years really jump out at you that would enrich a campaign?
Or just have an old favorite that always ends up working well for you?
I like areas that aren't super popular/written about, so I can take some artistic license without stepping on anyones toes.. (Not interested in Icewind Dale, most of the Sword coast, etc) tho some official canon maps or town info etc is nice once and awhile..

Moonsea region, you have enough background information to run the game in several timeperiods and you have the conflict between the city states, lots of potential for intrigues and backstabbing and if your players want to be the evil sort(which i would approve), the Zhentarim are right around the corner looking for more hands for their expansion.

I used to be a huge fan of Cormyr and the Dales, but this time around my campaign is set in the North. Lots of elbow-room there to add my own stuff in. There is just enough material to get me started, but not so much as to get in the way.

Excellent choice, I'm currently running a v3.5 campaign there myself. Even though the mechanics are designed for 3E you might want to give these articles a look through Borderland Kingdoms as they detail quite a bit of that part of Faerūn. Don't get discouraged that it's for pre-Spellplague because you can really use a lot of the information as is or change what you feel might have happened in a century (so long as your Player's aren't well-known about the area).

Indeed.

The Border Kingdoms, perhaps more so than any other part of the established Realms, are designed to be easily customised for particular and/or individual home Realms campaigns -- complete with swiftly shifting borders and ever-changing rulers. So there's plenty of room for new DM's to make changes and/or allow the addition of new details for your game.

Much of the Border Kingdoms area has never been detailed, in any edition.

You should be fine as long as you don't place your campaign in Halruaa or Maztica.

What sort of characters will be playing in your game? Do you have a player that wants to be a heavily armored warrior, a wizard that wants to have studied under a hedge-wizard or instead a great school of magic? That sort of thing is important.

If your fighter wants to be wearing plate, then a northern location is fine; but he shouldn't be running around in the deserts of Calimshan! I know that may sound like a tiny thing...but I usually start out planning where to place my players by their needs. If the fighter is going to be a light on his feet warrior in chain armor, then anywhere is fine.

Some out of the way places that are nice to "play with" are:

The Vast which runs south of Mulmaster down to the Sea of Fallen Stars.

The lands of Turmish...awesome kingdom central to be able to launch adventure into many surrounding lands if you like. The Vilhoun Reach is a good place for adventure.

Not truly last, but all I have time for right now is The Moonshae Isles. It has been a very long time since much of anything has been done really with the Moonshaes. I like them because they have many different islands; but you can go from there to anywhere along the Sword Coast, down to Chult, the Shaar and other lands all by sea...and then you could simply go through a portal to any other land you want.

Lots of places left...and I hope you find one that makes you feel "at home" in the Forgotten Realms!
