Hello Candlekeep!

I apologize if I'm not posting this in the right place, but I've been digging around trying to locate some information on any policy WotC might have on use of the Realms (or any other campaign setting for that matter) in fan-created work.

Obviously there's fan art out there, and I'm sure that there's prints of such sold at conventions and the like. But what about the use of names, obvious character designs, and the setting in general?

For example, for a long time I've been toying with the idea of doing some (non-profit) comics based on a campaign we ran in the Realms. Could I actually...do this? As long as the appropriate credits are given, of course. Or is this just a major no-no that should be avoided? Is fanart even considered "legal"?

Just call me Enwy the Paranoid Artist.

Sorry for not saying so sooner, but thank you for your quick replies, guys! You've definitely assuaged my fears. <3

This would also include having ads on your site, if it becomes popular enough for you to do so.

The sites I host maps on have ads, but that has nothing to do with me - I don't make a dime off of it. You, personally, cannot financially benefit in any way from what you do, even indirectly (unless at some point in the future WotC approaches you with work, in which case you obviously have their approval for such a project).

As long as money does not change hands for any reason, WotC will likely leave you alone. Being not for profit is not enough; I know of at least one site that was shut down by WotC when the guy running asked people to pay for hosting.

Ihave a fr fan fiction novel length work out there, yeah you can do it, just give credit where its do, and also mention that your work is not affiliated with wotc and for more details on the realms or other wotc products to please visit wotc's webpage.

and also be prepared to remove all traces of it should you get a cease and decist letterin your mailbox or email
