it's a thirst of stirges, and perhaps a flight of dragons, but what do you call a group of beholders? owlbears?

i remember seeing a list of names somewhere, somewhen, but i can't find it now. anybody have a link?

in the meantime, here's a few suggestions.

disclaimer: i'm not a zoologist, or any other sort of person-in-the-know about such things. i just poke google and pick nifty names that people-in-the-know have picked.

caveat: in several cases, several names are available in several sources. we're not all going to agree on what sounds nifty, so feel free to consult the sources and pick something different for your own game.

in the cases where the sources are Candlekeep posters, we're even less likely to reach unanimous agreement. pick the name you like best, or make your own.

sources: so far, Monster Manual and Shining South, plus a few monsters cherry-picked from other sources.

non-D&D sources include:
USGS, Wikipedia, and San Diego Zoo

i guess i was thinking of what the government of a nation would call a growing population of doppelgangers. masquerade is a pretty cool term too, though... just a different angle.

doppelgangers form druuth too, don't they? i think i remember that from Ruins of Myth Drannor... a group of doppelgangers led by an illithid or something.

also, i'm gradually going through monster manuals... as i get one finished i'll update each post with those plus the suggestions that have been made since the last update. that's my plan anyway.

A stampede of golems.

A harrow of nightshade.

A desecration of nightwalkers.

Great listing, xaeyruudh! Here's more:

A rage of dragons.

A hollow of dream vestiges.

A dirge of dracoliches.

i like a keening of banshees. Dennis suggested keen, which i think is brilliant, but i like keening a tad better. maybe. hm, keen is pretty good.

some of the "official" group names (like an applause of crawling claws) are great and/or funny, but others are pretty lame or just lack originality. like just about all humanoids are grouped in "gangs" or "squads". i think the official terms are fine for cases where nothing else comes to mind, but there are times when something else can work better.

with that in mind, groups of hyenas are called "cackles" which is kinda wonky but it can be combined with squad for a great way to describe gnolls: cacklesquads!

i also like a blight of beholders, or a sighting of beholders, or a spectacle of beholders,
a crisis of doppelgangers, or an exigency of doppelgangers,
a stench of dung crawlers,
a diligence of dwarves,
a vainglory of elves,
a swarm of eyeballs,
an urgency of gnomes, or a calamity of gnomes,
an eyesore of gougers, or a blinding of gougers,
a dilemma of halflings,
a spite of harpies,
a plague of humans, or a deathwish of humans,
an outbreak of orcs, or an epidemic of orcs,
a trap of ropers,
a revulsion of rot grubs,
a cacophony of shriekers,
an audience of sinisters,
a clatter of skeletons,
a watch of spectators,
a skittering of spiders,
a shuffle of zombies,
and an inconceivability of tarrasques.

humans and demihumans might also be described by gender and age:
a giggle, an admiration, or a snarl of women,
a prank, an ogle, or a lodge of menfolk

given how many monsters we have (everything in any monster manual or whatever is fair game) at this point, i'm thinking it might be better to organize them by Type (aberrations, constructs, etc).

if i add separate posts, the mods have the divine ability to move them up to the top of the thread, yes?

On a more serious note... Beholders live in hives, and each hive has a Great Mother. Therefore, I'm thinking a group of beholders is a swarm. I'm not keen on saying such intelligent creatures are organized like bugs, but it keeps the terminology following the same theme.

Actually, Monstrous Arcana: I, Tyrant breaks down the social order/organisation of beholders as follows:- solitary, hive, city, and exile.

Solitary is self-explanatory. A Hive of Beholders consists of one hive mother and around 5 to 10 beholders. A City of Beholders is the coming together of two or more same-breed hive mothers and their individual Hives -- the resultant community is classed as a City. Exiles, are, of course, like Solitary Beholders, only instead being regarded as outcasts because they don't follow the ways of their hive mother, Hive, or City.

A Swarm of Beholders only results when a group of same-breed hive mothers come together every three-to-five centuries, along with their individual offspring, and exchange/analyse all of the knowledge gathered by each breed.

well, i think we should get the discussion going again, and hopefully i won't suffer from whatever bothered the previous poster.

Indeed. It was a good discussion, until something happened between the poster and the Mods outside that thread.

Anyway, to the OP, in the link above, I also suggested an oscillation of beholders. Fleet might work as well.

As for owlbears...Hmm. How about a furball of owlbears?

thanks Fellfire... with the suggestions from that thread, i'll ask Ed and perhaps turn this thread into a collection instead of a question.
