Hey gang...

Can anyone recommend a song or piece of music that could stand as the sad yet hauntingly lovely and ghostly song of the Elfsong Tavern?

Most of the music i use while i DM is ambient or else from an obscure source - it sort of breaks the suspension of disbelief if everyone stops and goes, "Hey, this is the theme from (x)!" so i never play the LOTR soundtrack, for example... i'd like to find something that isn't obviously from a well known movie or artist.

i don't know much about medieval/renaissance music, but i figure something in that vein would work. i did download some pieces from iTunes from a group/album called "Anonymous 4/The Second Circle: Love Songs of Francesco Landini" - the women singing are nice, but unfortunately, each piece features multiple voices, and the Elfsong should really just be one voice...

i tried looking up info on the Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance soundtrack (i don't know if any of my players have played this game, but i don't think they would recognize the audio) but i've had no luck finding anywhere to download that song you hear when you first enter the tavern.

Any ideas? i figure there must be a group that does fantasy stuff - maybe even going so far as to sing in elven...

P.S. - No "Dead Can Dance"... i dig them, but they are too recognizable in this group...

~::: Thank you i forgot that one too. The Insane Asylum sounds are very creepy. I actually had one of my players ask if we could turn it off it was starting to freak her out :)

Anything by Frederic Chopin is good for a heavy moody tune. Turned down low it makes great mood background music. Played this for a ravenloft campaign once... gave it a great feel.

Oooh! I'll second Chopin. Particularly his chamber music pieces. Good stuff!

Hmmm. Just about anything from Abney Park's The Death of Tragedy would probably work.

Even more useful, I believe, [and since I've used this music in a similar capacity before] would be the instrumental tracks on Songs From A World Apart by Armand Amar & Lévon Minassian. I'd recommend, particularly, the songs "The Winds Have Dropped" and "Those Were Good Times." All suitably earthy, and surprisingly elven-like in parts.

you could try Enya- sort of recognizable, but some of her tunes are more obscure and might not be known. Blackmore's night is another good one. For a lighter take, try anything by Dan the Bard (only if they can handle breaking fourth wall!!) or Iris and Rose. Both can be found on you-tube.
