I am searching for a detailed maps or maps of the Western Heartlands. Can anyone help? I am going to be placing a campaign there based around the Temple of Elemental Evil but I have found very few maps of it.

I did find this
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/fx20020703rt

Which is nice, I'll use it. But I am looking for more if anyone could help?

It's safe to say that if you paid money for it - aka Paizo.com, Nobleknight.com, RPGNow.com - you can print them out - as long as you have no plans to distribute the hardcopies. As for items you have on Kazaa - well, there is a reason there is a huge controversy about it.

In the end, when you buy these products fairly - you give not only the company selling them your dues, but the authors, developers and everyone else that has put their time and energy into creating the material for you.

Kind of a conundrum methinks.

If it's an electronic copy of a product that you could normally only obtain via official sources/sites like those I've mentioned above, and involved the transaction of money, then they are still illegal. Even if you have a copy purchased legally yourself and you download a pirated copy from Kazaa... it's still illegal.

To put it simply, all official TSR/WotC products that require money changing hands and are available on Kazaa as PDFs are illegal downloads.

Besides, most of the pirated files aren't true PDFs like those offered by paizo.com or RPGNow.com, as they are simply scanned. Officially purchased PDFs are fully integrated files that have features scanned PDFs don't have -- like search.

As long as you are purchasing them from "official" sites that have a license to sell the various TSR/WotC products -- RPNow.com and paizo.com being the main sites mentioned for PDF files -- you aren't doing anything illegal. And printing them for your own use is perfectly acceptable. I stress that portion for a reason. You cannot of course make a profit from the printouts of TSR/WotC PDFs -- that is, by selling them to friends. That's illegal.

It's only when you obtain such files for free through P2P software -- like Kazaa -- that you are doing something illegal.

I love PDF's, here is why.

Well I don't know the legality of printing out books you buy in PDF form, but my University only charges $.02 per page and that's even with color

So if I were to buy the books online in PDF form, then print them out, would I be doing anything illegal? ><

Okay, sorry but I have a few more questions.

What would be the best place to get Volo's Guide to The Sword Coast?

Well that was one question, I was thinking ebay...but am not sure I can trust it grrr.

Nobleknight.com or dragonstrove as well. Both sell out of print material and I've bought from both. Of course, Nobleknight has gotten most of my money over the years. :)

Don't forget also Mazrim that paizo.com and RPGNow.com offer these books as PDFs for $4-$5 US respectively. That is, if you don't mind PDFs... .

**looks guilty**

Okay I'll create my character today! Sorry =/

But Nobleknight, why didn't I think of that? I bought Dreams Of Red Wizards from there :D

I'll look into those thanks :)

It's hard because this is one of my first times being a DM, so I am still working through a lot of it the hard way. That's why I am using the Temple campaign to help me out...I'm gonna throw in some side adventures too of course, I'm thinking some Red Wizards, they're my favorite villians.

Elminster's Ecologies -- Appendix II also offers some small maps of the "upper" regions of the Western Heartlands. It's available as a free download at WotC here:- http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/2/fr_downloads/tsr9490.zip

The Forgotten Realms Adventures hardback has a basic map of the region as well.

What level of detail are you looking for, in addition to the map in your link?

I think Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast may contain a little more information and village locations.
