If anyone cares, I just updated the whip-dagger to Pathfinder from 3e, using that note from THO.

Whip-dagger (light exotic weapon)
36 gp; damage S 1d3; damage M 1d4; critical x2; range —; weight 4 lb.; type S; Disarm, fragile, reach, trip

Whip-dagger: The whip-dagger consists of a long, multi-stranded whip, with a dagger (including its hilt) tied into the ends of the strands. The dagger frequently cuts through the strands holding it tight, making the whip-dagger a fragile weapon. Hobgoblins in Faerûn are quite fond of this weapon.
The whip-dagger is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, although you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes.)
Using a whip-dagger provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon. If you have the Whip Mastery feat, this no longer applies.
You may use proficiency in the whip-dagger to count as proficiency in the whip for the purposes of feats and abilities. Hobgoblins with the pit boss alternative racial trait (Advanced Race Guide 121) are also proficient in the whip-dagger.

In Ed's original Realms, hobgoblins often wield long, spike-ended whips, that can snag foes and drag them closer, or lash and "lay open." I don't think they've ever made it into canon printed rules, however. Think drovers' whips (Indiana Jones used one in Raiders and its sequels; whips long enough to reach the lead horses of a three-pair team, from atop a coach) with the hilts of short daggerblades woven into the endmost three feet. Yes, the blades slice and damage the ends of the whips; hobgoblins are forever resplicing by the fireside, of evenings.

so, from 3e, the whip-dagger

A variation of the goblin-stick might be a sort of undersized (shorter) mancatcher ... tipped with blades or barbs or perhaps even a tight garotte to slice open a victim‘s throat ... an excellently effective yet cowardly weapon, methinks, well suited for goblins.

Yes, the pit-fighter weapons are all close combat stuff. Think gladiator but with more focus on quick‘n‘dirty brutal lethality. Stabbing fist-punch-dagger instead of slicy cestus, barbed spikes on knees and elbows, that sort of stuff.

The pit fighter weapons you mention are the close-quarter weapons? I think they would be nice adds to a hobgoblin's armory, just as the Goblin stick:

"Goblin Stick: A goblin stick is a forked and
hooked pole arm, used first by bugbears trying
to catch the smaller goblins. The goblin stick is
a wooden staff, six to nine feet long, gripped in
the middle. Each end is tipped with three
wicked blades. One hooked blade is used to
extract hiding creatures. The other blades are
pointed, sharp, and set at slightly different
angles to poke into the hardest to reach locations.
Goblin sticks are made and used by hobgoblins,
bugbears, and ogres."

The 2E PHBR10 Complete Book of Humanoids might also offer some pit-fighter types of weapons which are suitable for goblins.

I‘ve always assumed that goblins are sort of a blend between (small cowardly) kobolds and (large aggressive) orcs, in both stature and overall combat temperament. And they garner a modicum of respect from PCs when they‘re wielding spiky swords, spears, and polearms.

My attempt to present a sort of fighter/thief “nightkillers“ band of goblins, proficient in the use of flind bars obtained from their gnoll assassin-chieftain, met with comedy and dismal failure.

In 2e I've only seen racial equipment for goblinoids in the Dragonlance setting - more specifically in the "Tales of the Lance" boxed set. There they considered goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears as one people, and even if they have some characteristics of their own (hobs militaristic, bugs stealthy), the weapons were common to all.

EDIT: The goblin weapons cited in Tales of the Lance:
- Atl-atl (for empowering spears, coated in poison)
- Spiked club (with spikes dipped in dung, can infect targets)
- Viper dart (barbed dart with another kind of poison)
- Firebrands (opponents can pass out)
- Hot coals (in a pot, to heat firebrands or use as a grenade)
- Pole tri-flail (something between mancatcher and flail)
- Slimejars (grenade-like pots with small slimes or puddings)
- Tanglenet (small choke creeper kept in a bundle, constricts)

Well from 2nd Core Rules I can offer this.

quote:
Combat: Hobgoblins in a typical force will be equipped with polearms (30%), morningstars (20%), swords and bows (20%), spears (10%), swords and spears (10%), swords and morning stars (5%), or swords and whips (5%).

There is also mention that they keep their weapons is kept polished and repaired. There appears no race specific weapon in this source.
