Is there any chance we will ever get books written in the original campaign era? I wish we still had novels written in the era of Waterdeep being ruled by Piergeron.

I doubt it. 99% of Realms books are written with a timeline that refuses to look backward. That's too bad though because there are tons of interesting ages in the past that offer fertile ground for novels.

I second Artemas. There's no precedent in TSR or WotC history for novels being set in the time frame of previous editions. They might go into the distant past occasionally (not often enough) but my guess is that few/no novels will be set in the last 150 years going forward.

'Tis a stupid and annoying policy, especially now that 4e gave us a huge gap in the timeline. With luck maybe Mike Mearls and the newer powers-that-be can change the policy.

That is to bad. IMHO, Waterdeep was never so interesting as the days of Piergeron, Khelban, Mirt, Durnan, Danillo, etc. I have not been able to really enjoy any Waterddep centric novel as much that has not been set in that time frame.

I always wanted a novel that made Madeiron Sunderstone a central character. I guess that will never happen.

Well, there's still room for fan-written fiction, and Candlekeep is one place it can appear.

It's also possible that WotC will rethink its stance, especially once they get back to full strength and something resembling a regular publishing schedule.

There was some talk about WotC allowing authors to write novels from every age, but of course RSA would be limited and continuity would be harder to control (and we know how RPG gamers and readers are picky about that). I don't know how these possibilities evolved, though.

Yeah, WotC said that there would no longer be anything stopping authors setting things in the past but with the novel line as limited as it is, I don't see it happening except for flashbacks and exposition purposes.

I think our best bet would be another anthology but again, I don't see one being published.
