Which of the FR novels are must reads to understand the world the books are taking place in?
For example... is there a particular book (or series) that details the spell plague? This would be a "must read". There might be a set of books that tell the story of a character that doesn't impact or interact with the rest of the world. These would be "side stories".
What are the "must read" books?

Un fortunately no novels cover the spellplague. A few touch on it, but nothing that answers all questions.

The series that touch on the SP to some extent are The Haunted Lands, The Twilight War [though just in the 3rd book], and The Empyrean Odyssey. |

Generally, the 'side stories' like the Shandril and Knights of Myth Drannor series, or Songs and Swords are far more central to understanding the Realms than the big, contrived, non-Realmsian event series.quote:

Again, the richest interactions with Faerūn and what it's like are mostly a different set of novels than interactions with the grand fancies of the books department. |

| The first chapter or two of A Plague Of Spells deals pretty intimately with the spellplague while it's happening. The rest of the book happens about 10 years after it happened. |

-Realistically, there aren't any "must-read" books. The Forgotten Realms don't have an overarching metaplot that everything else revolves around, like Lord of the Rings, or Dragonlance (so I've heard. The stuff that happens in the books are pretty central and important to the entire setting). In that sense, mostly everything are those "side stories".
-Depending on when you first started following the setting, what timeline you're working with, some book series are going to have plot lines that are more relevant to specific larger issues the world is facing, but there's tons of plots like that in an equal number of books. |

I wouldn't say DRAGONLANCE has only one "overarching metaplot." There are various stories weaved throughout the history of the world.
Sure, there are some stories that have received greater attention, like the Heroes of the Lance and their extended families. But that was in the past. Now, the focus of the setting's fiction has long since moved past the Heroes, and branched out into new stories and new characters that comprise the entirety of what's happening across Krynn. |
