Unhappy year! that holds the hand of Death
And robs us all of friends whom we hold dear,
I pray the Spring should give you quickened breath
And wash away this mist of somber fear.

I know no words to slow the march of time.
No plea can stay the seasons or the knife.
I know too well the feebleness of rhyme
In capturing the beauty of a life.

And yet I speak, for silence will not bide
The loss of Great Men, whom we miss so well.
From loss, no living man can truly hide
And so we choose these stories still to tell:

Our friends we lose, but mem'ries will we hold
Far warmer than a fire against the cold.

Tis sad (while at the same time poetic) to see them both go within about a year of each other.

I think Dave stuck around just to get the last word in...

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Lots of great tributes are showing up now. I really like this one from Rich Burlew via his great Order of the Stick webcomic.

Too many are leaving us in these hard days. Let us hope they are together, in a better place (and playing a better game).

"Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly.
How much less them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation in the dust, are crushed before the moth?" - Eliphaz the Temanite, Job IV, 17-19.

"Yea, though he live a thousand years twice, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?" - Ecclesiastes VI, 6.

"There are no stupid questions – just a bunch of inquisitive idiots."

"Let's not call it 'hijacking'. Let's call it 'Thread Drift'."

Yes, I wrote it.

I would prefer, if anyone's going to quote me, that it include a link back here. Otherwise, it's fine.

A time of loss
Current mood:Devastated
Category: Friends

I saw poem that made me mindful of the profound loss of a dear friend. The poem originated regarding another man I admire, but reminded me of a recent loss.

Mike Sargent was a devoted and loving husband. He was a man of quality, integrity, and intellect. His loss makes this world a poorer place yet.

Rest in Peace Mike.

PS I couldn't get the hypertext links to work, so I would be appreciate moderator help for clean up.

Mod edit: Cast shrinky links.

Everybody throw up a tankard of ale tonight in salute. I'd like to know I'm toasting with friends. :)

My latest Realms-based short story, about a bard, a paladin of Lathander and the letter of the law, Debts Repaid. It takes place before the "shattering" and gives the bard Arion a last gasp before he plunges into the present.http://candlekeep.com/campaign/logs/log-debts.htm
